Julie Israel
Julie graduated from Pacific University with a Bachelor of Arts degree and summa cum laude honors in Creative Writing. Her emphasis was in poetry, but coursework also took her through intensive studies in fiction, non-fiction, and work as a reading editor for Pacific’s literary Magazine, Silk Road. She calls herself a poet first because her studies in poetry—in conjunction with learning photography—changed the details in which she sees and interprets the world.
After graduation, Julie spent a year teaching English in three middle schools in Yamanashi, Japan. Julie considers the year to be the most eye-opening, challenging, and rewarding of her life so far, and looks forward not only to more travel, but to the wonderful experience of living abroad again.
As long as she is in the States, Julie will continue to cultivate her experience in other ways: currently she is studying French, teaching herself acoustic guitar, and expanding her writing. Julie enjoys contributing to Suite101 especially because it allows her to report on and share the places her pursuits take her.
